When James VI of Scotland reached his majority in October 1579, following celebrations in Edinburgh, Regent Morton entertained the young King at Dalkeith Palace.

James Melville tells us that the fallen Regent before his execution was visited by Johne Davidson and from whom he craved pardons for his harsh treatment of him, the man for his preaching, the other for his book against the four Kirks. The affecting scene is also described by Hume of Godscroft who adds that, at the meeting Morton, the condemned man took Davidson in his arms and said “Yee wrote a little booke indeid but truelie I meant never evill towards you in my pairt forgive yee me and I forgive you.” Davidson, was moved to tears.
Morton was executed on 2 June 1581. The method of his execution was the Maiden, an early form of guillotine modeled on the Halifax gibbet. According to tradition, Morton brought it personally from England, having been "impressed by its clean work",
His corpse remained on the scaffold for the following day, until it was taken for burial in an unmarked grave at Greyfriars Kirkyard. His head, however, remained on "the prick on the highest stone”, (a spike) on the north gable of the ancient Tolbooth of Edinburgh (outside St Giles Cathedral), for eighteen months until it was ordered to be reunited with his body in December 1582.

He had considerable difficulty in finding a minister who would accept the office on his conditions, but at length Mr. Robert Montgomery of Stirling agreed to do so. It soon transpired that Montgomery was to hand over the revenues to the Duke on the promise of an annual pension equal to one-fourth of the whole. The arrangement as a vile bargain"' and so it was both In respect of its simony and because it set Church and government in sharp opposition.

The officials of St Andrews exercised as a jurisdiction, delegated by the authority co-extensive with that of the Kirk - but excluded the ordinary's jurisdiction in correctional matters, which was delegated to other officers. These officials educated in the universities of Europe, with their specialist skills soon acquired the responsibility in jurisdiction that had formerly pertained either to groups of clergy acting collectively, or to other episcopal officers such as the archdeacons. The venue of these official's work developed from the meetings of chapters to more comprehensive consistories, and finally to an established court with regular sessions. By the sixteenth century these courts were professionally staffed: the procurator fiscal had an important role in both advocacy and prosecution, while skilled procurators such as Johne Davidson, they were available to represent client's concerns in court. Court procedure could be highly complex, but in addition to the multiple stages of plenary procedure there were also forms of summary process which offered cheaper and more immediate settlements of disputes. Actions concerning the church or its priests were common, but the courts dealt more with the recovery of private debts, the settlement of testamentary matters and the regulation of contracts; the registration of acts of monition was also an important service to the minor financial transactions of the community. The officials and procurators involved in the operation of ecclesiastical jurisdiction clearly represented an integral part of the national judicial system. The church courts were not, however, immune to criticism, especially from the King's circle of appointees. In addition to threats of violence, the church lawyers faced much criticism, who had expected certain plenary procedures that discriminated in favor of the wealthier suitors.
Remaining relatively unmoved in times of national crisis, the church courts played an important role in the social and commercial affairs of ordinary people in sixteenth-century Scotland, and show no sign of decline during the Reformation. Much of the system, both in practice and personnel, survived the religious revolution intact and played an influential part in the subsequent development of Scots Law.

Resolved on the suppression of the episcopal order, the General Assembly charged Montgomery with corrupt doctrine and pastoral negligence. By Davidson's counsel, Montgomery agreed to submit himself, but he afterwards withdrew his promise, and was by the General Assembly of April, 1582, deposed from the ministry. On Saturday, the 9th June, Davidson was appointed by the Presbytery of Edinburgh to pronounce against him the sentence of excommunication. Davidson did so the day following in the church at Liberton, and the act was intimated by his brethren from their pulpits.
Montgomery was commanded to remain at Stirling, and not to aspire to the Bishopric of Glasgow under the pain of the highest censures of the Kirk. This order he soon disobeyed, for, in the month of March following, he entered the Church of Glasgow with a band of the royal guard and ordered the officiating minister to come down from the pulpit. The minister, however, held his ground and it was only by the prompt intervention of the magistrates that a tumult was prevented.
But, a royal proclamation was immediately issued calling on the citizens to disregard the sentence which was posted on the Mercat Cross of Edinburgh; but it proved inefficacious, as Montgomery still had to leave the city under circumstances of disgrace. Consequently, Davidson's life experienced personal danger. This bold, brash, outspoken preacher was now the enemy of the Duke.
The Duke of Lennox had publicly styled him “un petit diable”; (little devil) and apprehending the possibility of assault, Johne Davidson for the next ten successive Sundays was accompanied to the pulpit by an armed escort. Unable to inflict summary chastisement on the opponent of his protege, Lennox obtained a royal commission, empowering him to act as president of an assize for the trial of those concerned in Montgomery's degradation - mainly Johne Davidson.

The assize (court) was to sit at Edinburgh on the 27th of August, where Johne Davidson was to disclose the improper conduct of councillors to the king, but the Raid of Ruthven had effectually interposed, and interrupted the Duke's proceedings.
THE RUTHVEN RAID
Recent rulings and appointments given by the young King James, particularly those overturning General Assembly proceedings, had the Presbyterians convinced that he was being managed under the influenced of Lennox and when Lennox had the Earl of Morton tried and beheaded on charges of treason, no more proof was needed.
William Ruthven, 1st Earl of Gowrie, was the head of Scotland’s militant Presbyterians. particularly those overturning General Assembly proceedings, had the Presbyterians convinced he was being influenced by Lennox. Such was their fear of Duke of Lennox being so near to the King they decided to staged a coup.
In July 1582, the discontented lords made a bond to support each other in their enterprise to displace Catholic influences around the young king. Their party became known as the "Lords Enterprisers", their opponents were the King's favorite, the French Esmé Stewart, 1st Duke of Lennox, and James Stewart, the 4th Earl of Arran, who shared control of the government.
In August, Lennox and Arran held the Privy Council at Perth, and then they returned to Dalkeith Palace near Edinburgh. The Earls of Gowrie and Angus had invited young James to stay in Perthshire to be their guest on a hunting trip near the Ruthven Castle. James VI agreed and was then promptly “imprisoned” by the Lords of Enterprisers.
Leading the “Enterprisers” aka, Ruthven Raiders were the Earls of Mar and Gowrie, the Master of Glamis, the Laird of Easter-Wemyss, Lewis Bellenden, Lord Boyd, Lord Lindsay, the Abbot of Dunfermline, the Abbot of Dryburgh, the Abbot of Paisley, the Prior of Pittenween, and the Constable of Dundee.
The Ruthven Lords presented the King with a lengthy "supplication" explaining the motives of their surprise action, dated 23 August.
Johne Davidson, though not privy to the Ruthven plot, thought it best to make common cause with other Protestant lords, and along with some of his brethren, he hastily accompanied them to England, putting some distance between him and the King’s wrath. He made a journey to London, and there he became known at the English court, where Johne, true to his typical vehement oratory, he was designated by the English audiences "the thunderer."
Upon the downfall of Earl of Arran, Johne Davidson again returned from forced exile to Scotland; but declined returning to Liberton, and was chosen to deliver a morning lecture in one of the churches of Edinburgh. This was evidently the second charge at Holyrood. But, with his renewed preaching against the king's designs for a prelacy (king's bishops), denouncing the nobles as oppressors of their tenantry, and condemning the commons for imitating their vices, Edinburgh soon again got too hot for him. Again, he was counseled to leave Edinburgh and accept a rural charge.
After his release from Ruthven Castle, one way James tried to assert his political authority was by passing the Black Acts in 1584 which were new laws imposed on the Scottish church and unsurprisingly were not welcomed by Johne Davidson or the Reformation leaders in Scotland. This arrogant move reflected James’s belief that as king and was answerable only to God. While these events unfolded James’s mother Mary Queen of Scots was still alive but imprisoned in England until Queen Elizabeth I ordered her execution for treason and plotting against her. The irony of such events where James’s mother was executed by the Queen of England put him in pole position to be her heir as the godchild of the unmarried and childless Elizabeth.
By the spring of 1595, Johne was named for the second charge of Haddington. Haddington was the fourth largest town in Scotland at the time, and historically, it was the first chartered Royal Burgh in all of Scotland. But, proceedings for this settlement were suddenly broken off when John Maitland, 1st Lord Maitland of Thirlestane (Johne's benefactor) had a falling out with Queen Anne. She believed he had slandered her and accused her of being complicit with the Earl of Bothwell. Anne also believed she should be the rightful owner of Musselburgh and Inveresk, the lands belonging to Maitland, and these were to be transferred to her.
The appointment of Mr. Davidson to the church of Prestonpans seems to have been attended with a revival of religion in the parish and district, for on the 10th March, 1595-6, the Presbytery Record contains the following minute :--

Mr Davidson demanded "a lawful call," and in order thereto preached at Salt Preston on the 19th November 1595, and again on the 17th December.
Thus, he was cordially invited by the people to become their pastor, and Lord Newbattle having expressed concurrence, his induction was proceeded with. That event took place on the 5th January 1596, when Mr Davidson made a long address to his flock, and proposed to them certain religious stipulations.
Some time after his appointment to Prestonpans, Johne Davidson, along with five others, were appointed by the General Assembly to review the corruption of ministries at Nithsdale (the valley or dale on the River Nith), Annandale, Lauderdale, Eskdale, and Ewesdale.

Mr Davidson demanded "a lawful call," and in order thereto preached at Salt Preston on the 19th November 1595, and again on the 17th December.
Thus, he was cordially invited by the people to become their pastor, and Lord Newbattle having expressed concurrence, his induction was proceeded with. That event took place on the 5th January 1596, when Mr Davidson made a long address to his flock, and proposed to them certain religious stipulations.
Some time after his appointment to Prestonpans, Johne Davidson, along with five others, were appointed by the General Assembly to review the corruption of ministries at Nithsdale (the valley or dale on the River Nith), Annandale, Lauderdale, Eskdale, and Ewesdale.
Shortly afterwards Johne returns to the Presbytery of Haddington, not only lamenting the all the various corruptions infiltrating the Church, but trying to find a remedy for them. Initiating new measures connected with the foregoing corruptions, Johne Davidson’s proposal was approved of by the Presbytery of Haddington. It was thence transmitted as an overture to, and unanimously approved of by, the General Assembly.
The Presbytery Records, 1596, contain the following minute:
“Th' haill (Holy) gentlemen being required to reform their houses and use prayers at morn and evening, with reading of the Scriptures after dinner and supper, promised to obey; and for execution thereof every minister was ordered to visit their houses and see whether it was so or not ; and for behoof of the unlearned.”
Johne Davidson was ordained to pen short morning and evening prayers, with graces before and after meat, to be communicated to each minister for behoof of his flock. The Presbytery met on the 17th March, when the forms of prayer prepared by Mr Davidson were approved. These were as follows :—

"Blis us gude Lord and ther thi creatures quhilk the' pre- parest for our nurishment through Jesus Christ our Lord. .— Amen."
Grace Efter Meit.
"Bliss it be you, O Lord, for this nourishment of our bodies at this tyme and mekle mair for the continuall nurishment of our saull is by Christ crucefy it. To quham with the Father and the Haly Gaist be praise and gloire forever. God save the Kirk and countrey, King, Quene, and Prince.— Amen."
Morning Prayer.
"We hairtlie thank thi Hevinlie Father for all thi goodnes this nycht past beseiking thi to forgive us our sinnes for Christ Jesus thi sonnes saik, and blis our labour is and guid us this day in thi trewfeire. Contine wthetrew preaching of thi Word among us and give us grace to esteme mair of it than hitherto we have done, and save us from merciles strangeris, and tak notthipeacefromthisland. Send us sesonabul lwether and stay this greitd earth. Lord blis the Kirk, and King, Quene, and Prince, for Christ Jesus thi sonnes saik. To qu home with the, O Father and Haly Gaist, be all praise gloire and honour, for ever and ever.— Amen."
